Rediscover time-honored treasures and underappreciated productions from across cinematic history as part of our Classic Film Club! Make sure to arrive on time for an introduction to the selected film and get to know your neighbors with a post-screening discussion.
This month's selection represents an essential Western from the American New Wave movement, anchored by an iconic breakout performance from the late Robert Redford — it is 1969's Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.
This month's screening is a literary adaptation of epic proportion — it is 1955's East of Eden. Adapted from John Steinbeck's novel of the same name, the film is perhaps best known for launching James Dean into superstardom. Set in the Salinas Valley during World War I, it is a sweeping retelling of the Cain and Abel story, centered on Cal Trask (Dean), a moody, misunderstood young man competing with his "perfect" brother for the affection of their deeply religious father.
Nominated for four Academy Awards, East of Eden remains a poignant portrait of family dynamics and the search for identity.
Classic Film Club will meet the 2nd Thursday of each month. All screenings take place in the Library Program Room.
