Japanese American Voices

Learn firsthand what life was like as a Japanese American before, during and after World War II.

Yoshiko Kanazawa is a resident of San Jose and docent of the Japanese American Museum of San Jose. Born in 1935 to Denjiro and Teruha Nakahiro from Shikoku, Japan, Yoshiko grew up in the diverse Southern California neighborhood of Pasadena with four older brothers and sisters. In her talk, Yoshiko describes her family's wartime experience and their forced relocation to Gila River incarceration camp in Arizona.

This program is part of One Book, One Coast, a multi-state book club. We join 193 other participating libraries in reading George Takei's graphic memoir They Called Us Enemy. Participate in book discussions and other programs around the history of forced removal and incarceration of Japanese Americans during World War II. View One Book, One Coast programs.
