Classic Film Club: Rope (1948)

Rediscover time-honored treasures and underappreciated productions from across cinematic history as part of our Classic Film Club! Make sure to arrive on time for an introduction to the selected film and get to know your neighbors with a post-screening discussion.

This month's screening is Alfred Hitchcock's provocative psychological thriller, Rope (1948)! Two brilliant, intellectually arrogant young men murder their former prep school classmate in their Manhattan penthouse apartment—then throw a dinner party over the chest containing his body. They do it as an intellectual exercise to prove their “superiority”—that they can commit the “perfect murder” without being caught. Starring Jimmy Stewart, John Dall and Farley Granger with a script by gay screenwriter Arthur Laurents, the film has cemented itself as a controversial yet undeniably influential classic for its blend of Hitchcockian tension, real-time storytelling and queer coded subtext.
